To encourage scholarship and research on issues affecting the electrical construction industry, ELECTRI International makes a series of small grants each year to young academic researchers. The Early Career Awards are selected by the ELECTRI Council from a competition among younger faculty members. The Awards encourage ongoing investigation of the EC industry and also promote the value of electrical construction to colleges and universities across the country. ELECTRI International makes no claim to the Intellectual Property or any product rights derived from the investigators’ work.

In 2012, the Early Career Award proposal - A Systematic Approach for the Assessment of Green Opportunities for Electrical Contractors from Baabak Ashuri, School of Building Construction, Georgia Tech, received an additional award through an ELECTRI International partnership created by two ELECTRI Council members - the Atlanta Chapter NECA and Lutron Electronics Company, Inc.

The final report from this study, LIVE-C©- Lighting Investment Valuation for Electrical Contractors - A VBA/Excel Tool for Cost Estimation and Financial Analysis of Investments in Lighting Upgrade Projects, is now available to the industry.

The major objective of this research was to develop a business feasibility analysis tool capable of calculating related financial measures (e.g., Project Cost, Rate of Return, Payback Period, and Net Present Value) for lighting upgrade projects and offering a way to present these investment information items to the client in an easy-to-understand visual platform. The developed LIVE-C© tool is an automated economic valuation tool that equips electrical contractors of every size to maneuver the lighting upgrade market more efficiently and effectively.

This business feasibility analysis tool  provides an interactive platform for the electrical contractor to discuss the scope of the lighting upgrade project with the owner. The established interactive platform in the tool helps the electrical contractor to try various upgrade configurations for the project and select the option(s) that best meets the financial constraints of the owner. The owner can benefit from the interactive economic analysis tool as it provides great insight into the lighting upgrade project options. The electrical contractor can utilize the tool in real time to customize the project features according to the owner’s special requests. An instruction manual is provided in the appendix, allowing any user to conduct an effective business feasibility analysis.
